What Depop actually publishes
Only the four-photo, one-video limit comes from Depop's own help centre, in the article 'How to list an item'. Depop publishes no dimensions, no file size cap and no list of accepted formats at all. The square is what the app's grid does rather than something Depop documents, so 1280 × 1280 is our recommendation — and a blog quoting it as a Depop requirement has invented one.
How to resize photos for Depop
1Pick your four
Drop in more than four if you are still choosing, process the batch, then upload the ones that made the cut. Mixing HEIC, JPG and PNG in one go is fine.
2Keep the square
The Depop preset is 1:1 at 1280 px with white padding, so a wide shot keeps its full width instead of losing the ends. Switch to crop if you framed tight already.
3Download and list
Take the set as a ZIP, move it to your phone, and lead with the photo that shows the whole item.
Depop gives a listing four photos and one video. That is the smallest media allowance of any marketplace on this site — Vinted takes twenty, eBay twenty-four — and it changes how you shoot. There is no room for a throwaway angle, and those four have to cover the whole item between them: the fit, the label, the fabric, and whatever flaw a buyer would otherwise message you about.
What Depop does not give you is a specification. Its listing guide states the four-photo limit and stops there — no minimum resolution, no maximum file size, no format list, no aspect ratio anywhere in the help centre. The square you see in the app is real, because the shop grid and search results crop every thumbnail to 1:1, but Depop has never written it down. So the square here is our recommendation, not a rule anyone can point at.
1280 × 1280 is where we landed. Depop is browsed almost entirely on phones, where a grid tile is a few hundred CSS pixels across on a 3× screen; 1280 stays sharp when a buyer taps through to the item, and still uploads in a second on mobile data. Pad rather than crop when your shot is wider than square — padding loses nothing, whereas the app's own square crop takes the decision away from you. If the same rail is going up on Vinted as well, the cross-listing page runs both shapes from one batch.
