Instagram image specs
Feed dimensions come from Instagram's own help pages. The Stories numbers come from Meta's advertising specs — Instagram does not publish separate dimensions for organic Stories. Instagram's publishing API accepts JPEG only, so JPG is the safe output.
How to resize photos for Instagram
1Add your photos
Batch a whole carousel at once so every slide comes out the same shape — mismatched ratios in one carousel look careless.
2Pick the format
4:5 for maximum feed height, 1:1 for a tidy grid, 9:16 for Stories. Padding keeps the whole photo; crop fills the frame.
3Download and post
Airdrop or sync the files to your phone, or post from Instagram on the web.
Instagram accepts feed images between 4:5 portrait and 1.91:1 landscape. Anything outside that range is cropped automatically when you post — and the app crops from the centre, which is exactly where the interesting part of a product photo usually is not. Resizing beforehand is how you keep control of the composition.
Instagram serves feed images at 1080 pixels wide. Upload something larger and it gets downscaled with Instagram's own compression; upload something under 320 pixels wide and it gets upscaled and looks soft. At 4:5, the target is 1080 × 1350 pixels — the tallest a feed post can be, and the one that occupies the most screen while someone scrolls.
Stories and Reels covers are 9:16 at 1080 × 1920. Keep roughly the top and bottom 14 percent, about 250 pixels each, clear of anything important — that is where the profile row, the caption and the interface controls sit.
